Working In America

For many people out there, working in America is like a dream. It is easy for Americans to take it for granted, but the right to work in America is something that is not afforded to everyone. There are people from Mexico, Canada, Europe, Asia and, and all over the world who would love the chance to make a better life for themselves working in America. Unfortunately, they don't always get the chance to do this.

I have personal knowledge of this problem as my girlfriend used to be one of these folks. She grew up in Ireland, with dreams of moving to America and getting a work visa. Unfortunately, she had no particularly specialized skills that were needed in this country. She had some high tech knowledge, but there are so many qualified technology workers in America nowadays that she still couldn't get a visa for years. Despite having a high-level education, it took her literally four years to get a permit to work in America.

She told me that, in the long run, it was worth the wait. I have never really taken advantages of all of the opportunities for working in America. I actually got a pretty lucky job lead that really paid off. I started working at home a few years ago for a friend of mine who was starting an Internet business, and everything sort of fell into place. Most rags to riches stories of working in America involve a lot of hard work and sacrifices, but mine really did not. Everything I tried simply worked out for me.

For my girlfriend, however, it was as different as night and day. Working in America was no picnic for her. Her first job did not work out at all. The boss was a complete flake and had defrauded the investors of several thousand dollars of money. It seemed that he did it through incompetence rather than any deliberate intent, but the result was the same. By the time she found work in America that really suited her, another year and a half of poverty had passed. Still, when she found a good job, she worked as hard as she could. It took a while, but eventually she was able to elevate her standard of living. Nowadays, she is doing better than she ever has before. In the long run, working in America paid off for her, but it did take a while.

Summary
Working in America for people who immigrate here can take some time to be beneficial to them. Jobs are very scarce and even highly qualified applicants may have to wait for working visa for years. Once this hurdle has been removed, immigrants can find the work which they were after. The American Dream is very much alive and well.
