Basically, the switcher will change the live shot from camera to camera per the instructions that you get from the director and/or the producer. The switcher position is a hard one, and is not for someone who has a hard time with stress. However, it can be one of the most fun.

You can also learn what the producer and the directors do through your courses at television production school. These are not commonly positions that you can get straight out of school, but they are ones you learn as you go and then move up to as you make your way through your career. Remember, you don’t have to stay in news if you go through television production school, as people are needed for all types of programs. You can even start your own video production company if you take more classes that can help you out with that. These can be very fun and rewarding careers for the right people.
