How To Read Job Listings

You may think you have found a great job in the paper or online, only to be blind sided when you go in for an interview. I know this has happened to me a few times in my life. There are times when you can totally misread a listing, or perhaps the listing is so vague that you put your own spin on it, only to find out that you were wrong. Not only are you wasting your own time, you are wasting the time of those interviewing you. You have to be smart when looking through job listings so you know you are applying for the right ones.

Be realistic about what your qualifications really are. When none are in the job listings, you have to take the rest of the ad into consideration before you apply. If you know the position is far beyond your reach, it won’t matter what your qualifications or education might be. At the same time, you should think about how the job listings fits within your career. When looking at a position that is something that is way below your experience, you should skip it. You may really need a job, but there is a reason why companies won’t hire someone they consider to be over qualified. They know you will leave the moment something better comes along.

Really read each of the job listings you find without prejudice. That means that you should never assume anything about the job or put your own spin on it. If some of it sounds like what you have been doing, it might be a good match for you. However, just one thing can mean the job is not what you want. Don’t assume the job will be the same, as they rarely are. These job listings are iffy ones. You can apply, but be clear in the interview that you need to know more about the position. You may end up with a job that you can’t do, and you may soon leave. That is not the best thing to have in your work history.

Lastly, beware of misleading job listings. This is something that is becoming more and more common. Some companies are taking advantage of those looking for work that they can do at home. There are many of great job listings for those who do work from home, but not all of them are honest. If the job description sounds too good to be true, you can bet that it is. Never send someone money to get a job, and never take anything that might be shady in anyway. It’s hard when you need work, but taking the time to find the right employment listings is going to pay off in the end.

Summary
Reading job listings should be done wtih an open mind. Pass on jobs that are beneath your skill level. Applying would be a waste of your time and theirs. Be wary of jobs that offer work from home opportunities. Most of these are scams.
