There is a lot that you have to put into a job search, but many fail to think of all the important things that might land them their first real job. When you are new to a field, you have to know all you can about where you want to go and what might be required of you in an entry level position. This is when it is smart to think about your degree and experience, and then do some research to find career information that pertains to you. Knowledge is powerful, and it might mean the difference between an okay interview and slamming one out of the park.
When I first started interviewing, most of my leads came though my school. This meant that they could call employers back that did not hire me to ask them why they choose to go with someone else. One thing that seemed to haunt me was that I did not seem enthusiastic enough about the positions I was interviewing for. There was a flaw in this, as I was excited about many of my first job leads, but for some reason that did not come through in the interview. My school suggested that I do some career information research so that I knew more about what I was getting into.
I did not understand what this career information would do for me, but I did learn a lot. Even more incredibly, it did help me in interviews. I knew more about where I was headed and what I wanted to do, and that did show through in the interviews. It did take me a while longer to get the job I wanted, but there were no more comments about my enthusiasm. Most of the time it was simply a lack of experience that help me back. As it turned out, finding out career information in my field was one of the best things I could have done.
You can find career information in many places. You can look online or you can research in the library. You want to find the most up to date sources however, as things change and many careers are quite timely. That means things change faster than books can be published. You may want to stick with magazines when going to the library. You can also find the best information when you are looking for career information by finding a mentor. They are the best and most accurate source for what you need to know.
